Notes from our speakers from the 1999 Convention
Pat Smith
Illinois Movers' & Warehouseman's Association:
Primary focus of Illinois
Association is to promote the moving profession, to the public, as an
honorable profession filled with educated professionals.
They are
trying to rid the public of the image of the unsophisticated, uneducated,
burly mover.
They get information to the public as to how to choose a mover via their
website.
Illinois movers must take a compliance test and have a Certificate of
Insurance on file with the Association in order to be a member.
Good P.R. for your local papers in the spring: How to avoid rip-off
movers. Call your local paper and offer to provide the information for
the article.
Good P.R. Have a silent auction, golf tournament, etc. and pick a favorite
charity and donate yearly. It is a win-win situation. Your
charity benefits from the monies and the moving industry benefits from the
free press.
Mike Golden
Missouri Department of Transportation:
Mike informed us of the
strides the state is trying to make in upgrading & building our highway
infrastructure.
Just to repair and expand I-70 from Kansas City & St. Louis will cost
5-7 million dollars a mile. They are using "Smart Roads"
throughout Kansas City & St. Louis - Those of us who attended the
convention saw the new highway alerts in and around Branson. They seem
to be helping the public be aware of delays and alternate routes.
Estelle Tredway
Vice President/Claims Analyst AMSA:
Carrier liability in the very near future
will only be replacement coverage. Not a good change for our industry
and bottom line.
Milbin Printing will be coming out with the PBO inventories in the near
future.
Don't use tape on stretch wrap - it will quickly ruin the furniture pads you
place around the article. Use rubber bands.
Dolphin pads are very good unless you operate in warm climate.
Warned against using stretch wrap for white items that are stored. The
items will yellow if left in the stretch wrap for extended periods of time.
Don't buy cheap pads - you are just throwing good money after bad.
Hardware cartons are saving movers lots of money! Mark the carton as
the hardware carton for the shipment, put all nuts, bolts, remotes, tools,
etc. in carton and load it last.
Steve Waters
Motor Carrier & Railroad Safety:
The Missouri "T" numbers will
soon be a thing of the past. All carriers with intrastate will use
their ICC authority number with a special designation at the end to indicate
they also have intrastate authority. Carriers with only intrastate
authority will be given a number similar to the ICC designation now used.
A new Intra Tariff will be issued by July 15, 2000. Questionnaires
will be going out to carriers holding intrastate authority to determine what
actual costs are for our industry and will be compiled to formulate a new
tariff. Please fill this survey out and return as soon as you
can. The data you report will be used to bring our tariff up to
current operating cost levels.
Our thanks to all
of our speakers for sharing their knowledge, insight & time with us!
